The photoelectric effect is one of the fundamental phenomena that contributed to the development of modern physics by demonstrating that electromagnetic radiation cannot always be described solely as a classical wave. This study aims to describe the physical characteristics, theoretical interpretation, experimental evidence, and technological relevance of the photoelectric effect through a qualitative descriptive literature review. The study synthesized recent physics textbooks and scientific articles published between 2021 and 2026, including international and Indonesian publications. The analysis focused on the relationship between photon energy, incident-light frequency, work function, maximum kinetic energy, stopping potential, and the role of photoelectric phenomena in contemporary optical detection technologies. The literature synthesis shows that the photoelectric effect is characterized by the existence of a threshold frequency, nearly instantaneous electron emission, and the dependence of photoelectron kinetic energy on light frequency rather than intensity. Einstein’s photon model provides a consistent explanation through the energy relation E=hf and the photoelectric equation K_max=hf-ϕ. The synthesized theoretical graph confirms the linear relationship between incident frequency and maximum kinetic energy, while differences in work function shift the threshold frequency among materials. Recent studies further demonstrate that photoelectric principles remain relevant to virtual laboratories, educational instrumentation, photodetectors, imaging systems, and emerging optoelectronic devices. Thus, the photoelectric effect is not only historically significant but also remains conceptually and technologically relevant in contemporary physics.
