The air-compression process occurring within a reciprocating compressor essentially follows polytropic characteristics rather than being purely isothermal or fully adiabatic, causing the specific heat of the working fluid to change with fluctuating temperature, and studies specifically evaluating the relationship between test-temperature variation and the polytropic index and efficiency of reciprocating compressors using a variable specific heat approach at the educational-laboratory scale remain limited. Departing from this premise, the present study aims to determine the polytropic index (n) and efficiency (η) of a reciprocating compressor tested under three temperature conditions, namely 50°C, 60°C, and 70°C, with the driving motor's rotational speed held constant at 1000 rpm, and the findings are expected to enrich the understanding of the thermodynamic behavior of reciprocating compressors under real operating conditions while supporting the test apparatus's function as a learning medium for thermodynamics practicum. Testing was carried out using a reciprocating compressor test apparatus at the Energy Conversion Laboratory, with the polytropic index determined through an ideal-gas approach, while efficiency was obtained by comparing the enthalpy under ideal conditions against that under actual conditions, both derived from interpolation of gas property tables. The findings reveal that the value of n increases with rising test temperature (1.020; 1.034; 1.044), with an average efficiency of 71.5%; in addition to raising the temperature at the compressor's discharge side, the increased temperature was accompanied by a decrease in discharge pressure, a consequence of the differing durations required to reach steady-state conditions. These findings underline the importance of a variable specific heat approach in analyzing reciprocating compressor performance so that the calculation results more accurately represent actual field conditions, and can serve as a consideration in setting compressor operating temperatures to maintain discharge-pressure stability.
