Abstrak

This research aims to determine students' ability to understand the concept of characteristics of electromagnetic waves by students at the University of Jember. This qualitative research uses questions formed in a questionnaire. The questionnaire is a test containing 10 questions in questionnaire form and distributed via WhatsApp social media to respondents, namely Jember University students. Electromagnetic waves are a form of transverse waves or moving waves whose oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of the wave or propagation path and originate from a combination of a magnetic field (B) and an electric field (E) which can propagate in a vacuum or empty space. GEM or electromagnetic waves have a spectrum of different colors, including radar waves, microwaves, infrared rays, X rays, gamma rays, and also UV rays. In a vacuum, electromagnetic waves propagate at the same speed as the speed of light, namely 3 x 108 m/s. Electromagnetic waves have important elements in them. These important elements or parts include wavelength, amplitude, frequency, speed. Electromagnetic sources are everywhere, the sun, stars, lights, and tornadoes are natural sources of electromagnetic waves. This journal discusses the characteristics of solar electromagnetic waves based on studies from international journals. This journal also discusses students' understanding of electromagnetic waves caused by the sun. The scores obtained by students in understanding the concept of the characteristics of electromagnetic waves caused by the sun are classified as very low because of the 10 questions, students can only answer 1 to 2 questions with the correct answer. For students who can answer 1 question correctly the percentage is 93%, for students who answer 2 questions correctly the percentage is 7%..
