Chinese drama series, commonly referred to as C-drama, have grown into one of the most widely consumed forms of digital entertainment across national borders, and Pursuit of Jade is among the titles that drew the most attention after its heat index surged on both Tencent and iQIYI. The drama juxtaposes two opposing social classes, represented by Fan Changyu, who comes from a butcher's family, and Xie Zheng, who belongs to the aristocracy, making the way the series stages their class difference worth examining. This article aims to unpack how visual and verbal signs in the drama construct denotative and connotative meanings of social class, while also tracing the myths and class. ideology embedded within its narrative. The study adopts a qualitative approach set within a critical-interpretive paradigm and applies Roland Barthes' three-stage semiotic model to thirteen selected scenes spread across twelve episodes. The findings indicate that the lower class tends to be depicted through plain clothing, cramped working spaces, and blunt speech patterns, while the upper class is portrayed through formal attire, opulent residences, and carefully maintained etiquette. Four recurring myths were identified: the superiority of the upper class, social mobility framed as a personal matter, poverty treated as an individual failing, and the upper class positioned as a savior figure—all of which work to naturalize social inequality as something ordinary. Ideologically, the drama occupies an ambiguous stance: it extends sympathy toward its lower-class protagonist while simultaneously reinforcing the very class hierarchy it appears to critique.
